A Letter From Our CEO
Dear Friends,
After 50 incredible years with the Boys & Girls Club of Pawtucket, I’ve reflected on all we’ve
accomplished together to empower youth. It has been the honor of a lifetime to provide opportunities
in a safe environment where kids feel supported and inspired every day.
This past year, we served more than 4,000 youth across our Alfred Elson, Jr. Clubhouse in Pawtucket and
our 170.5-acre Camp George R. Ramsbottom in Rehoboth, MA. We also celebrated our 125th
anniversary, honoring the generations of people who found a second home at the Club. With this
milestone came the launch of our 125th Endowment Campaign, ensuring our mission’s sustainability
and expanding opportunities for future generations.
It was also a year of tremendous growth. We broke down barriers by awarding 1,695 scholarships,
expanding transportation, and strengthening our academic and leadership programs. Not to mention,
we saw 800+ campers each day this summer. None of this would be possible without our dedicated
staff, volunteers, donors, partners, and lifelong friends of the Club.
Thank you for being part of this mission. I look forward to all that lies ahead and know the Club will
continue to thrive for generations to come – as always, it’s all for the kids!
With gratitude,
James R. Hoyt, Jr.

OUR VISION FOR…
CONFIDENT SELF-EXPRESSION THROUGH THE ARTS
Every young person deserves the chance to find their voice and share their creativity. Within our Clubhouse, members explore self-expression through the Music Room, Podcasting Room, Dance Studio, and Art Room. All of our art spaces are designed to encourage imagination and confidence.
Why this matters:
Only about half of Pawtucket students are enrolled in arts courses during the school year, leaving many without a creative outlet. The arts help youth express themselves, develop self-confidence, and discover new ways to connect with others.
How we responded this year:
Through dance, talent shows, and design challenges, our staff encouraged youth to take creative risks and celebrate their growth. Our Visual Arts Instructor offered year-round arts education at both the Clubhouse and Camp Ramsbottom, giving hundreds of member’s opportunities to create, perform, and explore their artistic interests
Success Story: Dancing to Nationals
During our 125th Anniversary Celebration, our talented members performed an original dance that opened the speaking program. Many guests said it was the highlight of the event. Boys & Girls Clubs of America CEO Jim Clark was so impressed that he invited the performers to attend the BGCA National Conference in North Carolina in May 2026.
OUR VISION FOR…
HEALTHY LIFESTYLES
The Boys & Girls Club of Pawtucket takes a holistic approach to health, nurturing the physical, nutritional, and emotional well-being of every member. We offer daily fitness challenges, team sports, free healthy meals, and structured social-emotional learning supports that help youth build lifelong
healthy habits.
Why this matters:
Less than one in four Rhode Island middle and high school students meet daily physical-activity recommendations. Many children also face barriers to sports and recreation opportunities, making programs like ours essential to long-term health and well-being.
How we responded this year:
Our Healthy Habits curriculum reached 550 youth, teaching the basics of nutrition, hydration, and active living. To make recreation accessible, we awarded over 100 athletic scholarships, allowing youth to participate in aquatics, basketball, and baseball regardless of income. Beyond physical health, our licensed social worker led small-group SEL (social emotional learning) sessions for over 300 members, helping them manage emotions, build positive relationships, and develop confidence.
Success Story: Healthy Inside & Out
One of these 300 members include Myalynn, a 10-year-old all-star who has shown so much growth in her emotional awareness by practicing important coping skills. Myalynn shares, “I love going to SEL groups because they’re fun and help us when we’re feeling sad. We do different activities to learn about
emotions and being healthy – physically and mentally!”
OUR VISION FOR…
GOOD CHARACTER & CITIZENSHIP
Character development is central to our mission, helping youth grow into responsible citizens and compassionate leaders. Through programs like Keystone Club, our teen-led service and leadership group, and Members to Moguls, our workforce development program, members gain the tools to lead, serve, and succeed.
Why this matters:
In Rhode Island, only 18.5% of residents ages 16 and older formally volunteered in the past year, placing the state among the lowest in the nation for organized community service involvement.
How we responded this year:
Our Keystone Club members demonstrated their commitment to service, completing over 200 hours of volunteer service at elderly homes, community clean-ups, and more. Additionally, over 40 teens completed our Members to Moguls Workforce Development program, learning real-world job skills and preparing for placements in paid community internships.
Success Story: Alexis’s Journey to Leadership
Alexis, President of our Keystone Club, delivered a heartfelt speech at the Rhode Island State House on the importance of funding afterschool programs and shared how the Club helped shape her leadership. She was also one of seven Club members who attended the National Keystone Conference in Chicago, where she strengthened her passion for advocacy and service. See page 13 for highlights from the
conference.
*Community data for our four impact areas were drawn from the 2025 Rhode Island KIDS COUNT
Factbook and Boys & Girls Clubs of America program research.
THE 2024 ANNUAL MEETING
In November our Club welcomed over 100 supporters, inclusive of our board members, trustees, community partners, Club staff, and youth, to our 124th Annual Meeting. The event was hosted at our Clubhouse and marked the official kick-off to our 125th Anniversary, celebrating 125 years of inspiring
great futures.
A highlight of the evening was the unveiling of the 125th Anniversary logo, a symbol of both the Club’s legacy and its continued commitment to youth and families. Attendees were among the first to learn about the launch of the 125th Endowment Campaign, an initiative to raise $125,000 to support the
Club’s long-term sustainability and expand opportunities for generations to come.
The meeting recognized the leadership and service of outgoing and incoming board members and trustees, thanking each for their dedication and commitment to advancing the Club’s mission. To do this, the Club introduced five new annual award categories, which were presented by Club members
and friends who shared personal stories.
2024 Award Recipients:
- Rhode Island Community Food Bank – Community Partner of the Year
- Christine Jarosz – Board Member Excellence Award
- Jah’niya Morris – Part-Time Staff Member of the Year
- Lito Carvalho – Full-Time Staff Member of the Year
- John (Jack) McCabe – Alumni Excellence Award
YOUTH OF THE YEAR – PASSING THE TORCH
In 2024, Jerry Carino carried the title of Youth of the Year, serving as an outstanding role model for his peers and a proud representative of the Club. A member since 2012, Jerry began as a young swimmer before joining our RBI Baseball League and the Sharks Swim Team. His leadership extended beyond the Club through Model United Nations and Student Council at La Salle Academy, where he graduated before attending Yale University.
Now, the torch is passed to Grace Chipel, our 2025 Youth of the Year. A seven-year member of the Club and a graduate from North Providence High School, Grace has been a dedicated Sharks Swim Team member and mentor to younger youth. Homeschooled before high school, she credits the Club with helping her gain confidence and find her voice.
“The Club has given me so much confidence. I learned I didn’t need to hide myself—I had things to say, and it was good to say them!” – Grace Chipel, 2025 Youth of the Year
Grace went on to attend University of Massachusetts Amherst and plans to join the Army National Guard, carrying forward the strength, courage, and community spirit she discovered at the Boys & Girls Club of Pawtucket.
SWIM SAFETY PROJECT
Thanks to generous support from a local foundation, the Boys & Girls Club of Pawtucket carried out essential upgrades to our pool facilities through the Swim Safety Project, improving safety, accessibility, and overall swimmer experience for our members.
Swimming remains one of the Club’s most popular programs, with over 400 youth participating in swim lessons, free swim, and our Sharks Swim Team each year. The Swim Safety Project helped ensure that every child can enjoy these opportunities in a safe and welcoming environment. With Fidelity’s support, the Club completed major pool deck repairs, resurfaced high-traffic areas with slip-resistant materials, and replaced 100 lockers.
The upgraded locker rooms are handicap-accessible and designed for privacy and gender equity. The project also funded staff and lifeguard certification training, ensuring our aquatic team maintains the highest standards of safety and supervision.
This effort was further supported by the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management’s (DEM) Water Safety Grant Program, which funded 56 free swim lesson scholarships for local youth. The grant gave inner-city children, who might not otherwise have access to swimming instruction, the opportunity to gain confidence and water safety skills to safely swim right here in the Ocean State!
CAMP RAMSBOTTOM: A YEAR IN REVIEW
This year, 1,814 campers (ages 6-13) experienced an unforgettable summer at our 170.5-acre Camp George R. Ramsbottom. Youth traveled from 60 different towns and cities across Rhode Island and Southeastern Massachusetts to enjoy a summer filled with exciting outdoor adventures and activities, such as archery, pickleball, campfire cooking, sports, and so much more!
“Every morning, my son woke up excited to go to Camp Ramsbottom. He came home every day with stories about new friends, counselors who cared, and all the things he learned trying new activities.” – Camper Parent
This summer, 273 children received camperships, made possible through the generosity of Roger Messier, longtime friend of the Club and father of Board Vice President Bruce Messier, along with funding from The Champlin Foundation, Community Health Systems Foundation, a Congressionally Funded Community Project (CFCP) Grant from Senator Sheldon Whitehouse, the Ned and Eleanor Barlow Fund, and countless individual donors who contributed to our Annual Camp Appeal.
Beyond the summer season, Camp Ramsbottom continues to bring families together. In addition to another successful Trunk or Treat, sponsored by BayCoast Bank, and our festive Hot Cocoa & Hayrides, we proudly launched our first-ever Turkey Trot, drawing 115 runners and support from 13 corporate partners.
Additionally, we began expanding access to local youth programs and schools. In this first year of providing event rental opportunities, we welcomed 850 students across 11 schools, offering them something we believe all kids deserve— a chance to experience the magic of Camp!
KEYSTONE CLUB LEADERS GO TO NATIONALS
This year, the Pawtucket Panthers, our Club’s Keystone Club chapter, earned their Silver Keystone Charter from Boys & Girls Clubs of America (BGCA), recognizing their outstanding leadership, community service, and commitment to the values of good character and citizenship. Our Keystone Club members completed over 200 volunteer hours, visiting senior homes, mentoring younger members, and participating in city clean-ups.
With support from the Simon W. Wardwell Foundation and the Congressionally Funded Community Project (CFCP) Grant, we proudly sent seven Keystone leaders to represent our Club at the 58th Annual National Keystone Conference in Chicago, Illinois.
Attended by more than 1,000 teens from Clubs nationwide, the conference centered on the theme “Connect, Create, Captivate.” Our teens participated in workshops, career sessions, and service projects.
They also heard from keynote speakers including Common, Chamique Holdsclaw, and Alex Webber, who shared inspiring messages about leadership, perseverance, and the power of youth voice.
With our teens sights now set on achieving Gold (or even Platinum!) Charter status, the Pawtucket Panthers are already continuing their service and preparing for next year’s conference.
OUR 125TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION
On June 5, 2025, the Boys & Girls Club of Pawtucket proudly celebrated 125 years of inspiring great futures with a sold-out crowd of 300 supporters, alumni, community leaders, and friends. Guests were welcomed with live jazz from the JMW School for the Arts Jazz Band, while our Club’s teen podcasters interviewed attendees throughout the evening to capture stories. The program opened with an incredible dance performance by Club members that earned a spot performing at the 2026 Boys & Girls Clubs of America National Conference.
The speaking program was kicked off by Alison Bologna, Club Board Member and NBC 10 News Anchor, who served as the evening’s emcee. Speakers included event Co-Chairs Brian Morley and Jared Wade of the 125th Anniversary Committee; Bruce Messier, President of Butler & Messier Insurance and 1st Vice President of our Board of Directors; Joseph T. Fleming, President of our Board of Directors; Senator Jack Reed; and Jim Hoyt, our CEO.
We were especially honored to welcome Jim Clark, President & CEO of Boys & Girls Clubs of America, and Victor Cruz, Boys & Girls Club alum, Super Bowl Champion, and youth advocate, who both shared powerful reflections on the national impact of Club experiences.
The evening also recognized our 2025 Award Honorees:
- Paul Morrisroe – Volunteer of the Year Award
- Collette – Corporate Community Partner Award
- Thomas J. Westgate – Lyman B. Goff Founders Award
Special thanks to Presenting Sponsor Butler & Messier Insurance, along with our dedicated staff, event committee, sponsors, board members, and supporters who made this celebration possible.
SUMMER BASEBALL LEAGUE’S OPENING DAY
The Boys & Girls Club of Pawtucket celebrated Opening Day of our Nike RBI Summer Baseball League on June 30th. The event brought together hundreds of young athletes and their families for a day of baseball, games, food, and community spirit.
This year, over 330 youth participated in the league, learning not only the fundamentals of baseball but also teamwork, discipline, and sportsmanship. Each week, players showed up ready to learn – on the field and beyond – through the power of positive mentorship and play.
During Opening Day, the Club presented the 2nd Annual Ray Johnston, Jr. Commitment to Youth Award to Frank Ribeiro, honoring his many years of coaching and guiding Pawtucket’s young athletes. The award celebrates the lasting impact of longtime volunteer and coach, the late Ray Johnston, Jr., whose legacy continues to inspire those who dedicate themselves to helping youth reach their full potential.
The Club also unveiled the new “Kaufman’s Corner” in memory of Arthur J. Kaufman, a devoted Club
supporter whose vision and commitment helped shape both the Club and its baseball program.
Ceremonial first pitches from the Johnston and Kaufman families set the tone for an inspiring season opener that honored the past while celebrating the future of youth baseball in Pawtucket.
